Superior is located right on the southern side of the bridge from the large gay-friendly city of Duluth, Minnesota. Duluth is a bustling, hectic city compared to Superior, which is much more of a natural haven that has a bit of a laid back atmosphere like in the David Lynch series Twin Peaks. The proximity of the city to the lake makes it a little cooler than Duluth in the summer and warmer in the winter.
It is also very near to Pattison State Park, the home of the 165-foot tall Big Manitou Falls, which is the highest waterfall in the state. The city’s almost forty square miles is over half covered with water, which gives it a very natural and underdeveloped feel.
The main gay bar in Superior is a classy nightclub called The Flame. Superior also is the home of a lesbian bar called Bev’s Joint and JT’s Bar and Grill. For a bit of dancing you have to cross the bridge into Duluth to visit the Main Club. Both Superior clubs are on Tower Avenue. Gay friendly coffeehouses in Superior include the Jitters: Coffee & Teahouse and the Lakeview Coffee Emporium.
Superior has a council for the arts that helps finance local art projects and galleries including the Superior Arts Gallery. The progressive and culture-focused atmosphere might be partly due that it is also the home of the University of Wisconsin-Superior that has a well-known liberal arts program that includes Master of Arts Degrees.
