The area that is now Kent was, as is the case with most of Washington, inhabited first by Native American people. Its more modern-day history began with settlement by the European Americans in the 1850s, along what was then known as the White River. Because of its strategic location on the river, the city became an important center for commerce and trade. It grew quickly, both in its own right and as a suburb of the greater Seattle area. Today it remains a diverse and thriving city with plenty of opportunities and much to see and do for all who call it home.
