Allentown is a city in Pennsylvania that is technically considered a part of the New York City Metro Area. It’s home to almost 120,000 people, however, making it a good sized city in its own right. It’s also the largest city in the Lehigh Valley area that includes two other cities located on the Lehigh River. History buffs know Allentown as the city where revolutionists hid the Liberty Bell from the British when Philadelphia was left defenseless. While the city was fairly small up until the industrial revolution, once the Lehigh Canal was opened, the agricultural communities along the river transformed into urbanized industrial cities.
Many people consider Allentown to be somewhat conservative, but the overall Lehigh Valley area does have a good sized LGBT community, and few people have reported any harassment or discrimination. The city doesn’t have a gay neighborhood, but you’re likely to find other LGBT people.
Condos in Allentown start at $50,000 and end around $880,000. Single family homes range from $75,000 to $1.2 million.
