Some cities are posting big drops in population, due to unemployment, crime, or even Mother Nature. CNNMoney recently highlighted Census Bureau data that shows the U.S. cities that are seeing the most rapid declines in residents.
The five fastest shrinking cities in the U.S. are:
- Pine Bluff, Ark.
- 1-year population change: -1.5%
- Change from 2000 to 2010: -6.6%
- Joplin, Mo.
- 1-year population change: -1.3%
- Change from 2000 to 2010: 12.3%
- Flint, Mich.
- 1-year population change: -0.9%
- Change from 2000 to 2010: -2.4%
- Danville, Ill.
- 1-year population change: -0.8%
- Change from 2000 to 2010: -2.7%
- Binghamton, N.Y.
- 1-year population change: -0.7%
- Change from 2000 to 2010: -0.2%
