Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Gary Greene is using public school buses in the Houston area to promote its real estate ads.
“We are supporting our local school district through advertising on their school buses,” Lisa Dempsey, sales manager for the Humble, Texas, Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Gary Greene, told Inman News.
All of the ads carry the slogan: “Helping families make the right move!” and include the brokerage’s Web address and contact information.
Texas is one of only nine states that permit ads to be posted on the outside of school buses.
“You’re on a school bus — is there a better way to show you’re a part of the community than that?” says Cynthia Calvert, owner of Steep Creek Media, who helped launch the bus advertising campaign statewide for the purpose of generating extra revenue on buses. “It’s money [for the school district] without strings.” The school bus ads cost, on average, about $275 per month per bus for advertisers.
Several other real estate brokerages in other states are looking for the same opportunity, says Calvert, who says she’s fielded many calls from other brokerages looking to do a similar campaign splash.
As school districts see budget cuts, more are looking for advertising opportunities to increase their revenue. Some critics have spoken out against the rolling bus ads, arguing about the dangers of children being exposed to marketing promotions.
But ads are popping up all over schools across the country, including on lockers, cafeteria lunch trays, cafeteria menus, wall spaces, athletic scoreboards, and even on printed documents sent home with a child’s report card.
